The Best Year for Lexus GX470

by Jerry Ford | Last Updated December 12, 2022 | 6 min read

2009 Lexus GX470

The Lexus GX470 is quite a unique model from Lexus. The luxury automaker, surprisingly, only manufactured the SUV in a short six-year period.

Initially released as part of the 2003 model year collection, the GX470 is a memorable SUV that’s often considered one of the best Lexus releases – and why wouldn’t it be? Fashioned after the Toyota 4Runner, this Lexus has all the off-road capabilities and performance highlights of its Toyota counterpart, with a healthy addition of luxury, comfort, and style.

With only six model years available for a Lexus GX470 review, there are not many options when it comes to the best year for the Lexus GX470. However, we did some digging through the GX470 years and came up with what we felt was the best year overall.

If you’re a Lexus fan, keep reading to find out which model year this Lexus SUV hit its stride.

It’s only fitting that the last year for the GX470 production happens to be its best year overall. All one must do to demonstrate the popularity of this model is reference the Lexus GX470 reviews – which were pretty stellar across the board. So what makes the 2009 stand out compared to other years?

First, the Lexus GX470’s reliability is unmatched. On the low end, you’ll have no problem getting 200,000-250,000 miles out of these workhorses. However, you’re more likely to get somewhere to the tune of 300,000 miles, especially if you take care of routine maintenance and drive it sensibly. The 2009 model year even got the 15 percent power bump thanks to the upgrade on the V8 VVTi engine.

There are comfort features to make you feel like royalty. A moonroof, auto climate control, 11-speaker audio system, rear DVD Screens, and a 14-speaker audio system keep you plugged in. Driver assistance and safety features include ABS, stability and traction control, emergency brake assist, and even side-curtain airbags keep you safe and sound during your longest commutes.

Then you’ve got more options technology-wise with the 2009, like a backup camera, Bluetooth connectivity, navigation, and 9″ rear TV screens. This selection of tech is quite good, considering that this vehicle is from the naughties. There are also variants that are non-nav, if you fancy relying on more up-to-date applications these days.

There’s also the space factor. Without the third row, there’s just seating for five but you can maximize all the leg room and head room. Chrome door handles also come as an option. And, despite its off-road abilities, it still made for a softer ride for driving on paved roads.

To be quite honest, the fact that it’s the last release is what made this the best. The GX470 went through very little change during its six-year run. The newer the car, the fewer miles they supposedly get. Other than these, the GX470 remained a reliable model from start to finish – it had it all.

If you’re wondering how the GX470 is by the numbers, here are some specs:

If you’re thinking about purchasing a 2009 used Lexus GX470, you can find one in great condition – between 75,000 and 100,000 miles, for about $23,000. This is assuming there’s only one – maybe two, previous owners. You may even be able to chance upon a cheaper find.

Honorable Mention: 2008 Lexus GX 470

Any list featuring the best model year for Lexus GX470 wouldn’t be complete without at least an honorable mention from the 2008. What made this year so special? The step up from the previous size engine and into the upper echelon of performance with the 4.7L V8. This switch gave the GX 470 that additional boost it needed to really take it over the top for speed and off-road performance.

If you’re looking at a GX470 priced a little more modestly – the 2008 model could be your best bet. In great shape, you can snag one for about $14,000 – giving you a significant price reduction and additional savings. Most people would assume there’s a quality difference between the two – but honestly, both models have similar options.

Obviously, you’re not losing any performance compared to the 2009, and you’re getting almost exactly the same features, save for a few minor upgrades Lexus included for the final model year.

The Lexus GX470: Top-Rated Classic

The best year for the Lexus GX470 was difficult to choose because the progression from 2003 to 2009 was minor, and the brand stuck with what worked. While certainly a luxury vehicle, this GX470 was still a powerful but simple design and a perfect example of, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”

GX470 can be your daily commuter with all the laidback luxury options or get you close to Land Rover status with the right aftermarket support. Regardless, there’s no doubt Lexus hit the nail on the head with this highly reliable four wheel drive.
