The Truxedo Truxport vs Lo Pro Tonneau Covers Comparison

by Jerry Ford | Last Updated January 15, 2021

Truxedo offers a line of tonneau covers for truck owners looking for a way to accessorize their ride while protecting cargo at the same time. Two of the top products from Truxedo are the Truxport cover and the Lo Pro cover. Each of these covers is a soft top roll-up cover, but they are different in design. Each has its pros and its cons, but mostly they just function and look differently. These differences can make choosing between the two covers a bit easier for the knowledgeable consumer. Learn more about what these covers can do, and how they are the same and different down below.

Major Similarities

There are many similarities between these two Truxedo covers. They don’t just look similar, they also perform that way in many different ways.

The Roll Up Design

Truxedo Truxport vs. Lo Pro Tonneau Cover

Both covers roll back and out of the way rather than folding up like some covers available. The covers are locked in a rolled position using Velcro once fully retracted. Some buyers believe the roll-up design makes getting the cover out of the way is easier than a tri-fold cover, but rolling covers tend to perform worse in freezing conditions.

The Material

Both covers are made with the same thick leather grain vinyl material. The material is waterproof and designed for high-wind driving conditions. This roll-up material is thinner than what most tri-fold covers are formed from in order to be able to roll up. This is an important consideration to make when considering either of these cover options. Vinyl fabric also fades in direct sunlight over time, but most users report mild fading over time.

Built-in Tensioner

Each of the two tonneau covers come with tensioner systems to help keep the cover taut during use. When installed properly the covers remain tight during use, which can help hold them in place more effectively.

Major Differences

While both covers have many similarities, there are several key differences that need to be explored as well before deciding whether to get one or the other. Below are the major differences to consider.

Price

The Truxport cover and the Lo Pro cover are priced at different levels. While prices range, the Truxport tends to be about two-thirds the cost of the Lo Pro at any given time, making the Truxport cover the more economical choice of the two options.

Height

The Lo Pro is a low-profile cover by design and stays about 1.5″ lower to the truck bed than the Truxport cover does. This is because of the way the rails are positioned for the two covers. The Lo Pro has a more streamlined look because of this.

Rail Position

Truxedo Truxport and Lo Pro Rail Position

The two covers are affixed to truck beds in different ways while using similarly designed rails. The Lo Pro rails attach to the inside edges of the truck bed helping to position the tonneau cover right at the top surface of the truck bed. The Truxport cover is attached to rails mounted on top of the truck bed, lifting the cover up approximately one inch higher. This creates more storage space, but a less low-profile look.

Moisture Resistance

Both covers are designed to repel moisture and to keep cargo dry, but the Lo Pro tends to do a better job than the Truxport does. This is because the Lo Pro tonneau cover sits flat against the top of the truck bed, forming somewhat of a seal. The Truxport cover is mounted on rails on the bed edges. The rails aren’t perfectly waterproof, creating a path for water to flow through. The Truxport lets a bit more moisture in than the Lo Pro does for that reason, but both covers will allow some moisture in, especially if it’s raining heavily outside while driving around.

Removable Cover

The Lo Pro has a fully removable cover, while the Truxport cover must remain in position unless the rails are removed. The Lo Pro has a set of latches that allow the rolled up cover to be removed, the rolled up cover of the Truxport is fixed in position. This is an important consideration for truck owners that have to move around large cargo and need those last few inches of bed space that the rolled up cover occupies.

Wind Resistance

Owners remark about having more success driving in high winds with the Lo Pro tonneau cover than they do the Truxport cover. The lower profile, along with the arguably more effective self-tensioner system built into the Lo Pro is likely the reason the cover remains in place a bit better.

Warranty Considerations

Every Truxedo product is guaranteed to be in good working order when it’s sold. The Truxedo products are protected by warranties of different lengths that all safeguard the product from manufacturer defects. As long as the covers are installed and used properly, and fail because of defects they should be covered.

The Truxport tonneau cover comes with a five-year warranty against defects. The warranty is meant to keep a properly used cover from failing because of poor manufacturing qulaity.

The Lo Pro tonneau cover gets a lifetime warranty. This will offer a bit more protection to truck owners that plan on keeping their vehicles for longer than five years. It won’t help resale value though, because the warranties don’t transfer.

Warranties with all Truxedo products are only good for the original owner of the product. That means if the truck is sold, the new owner can’t make use of the warranty if something on the cover breaks.

Deciding on the Lo Pro cover versus the Truxport model means making many different considerations. While the Truxport is more affordable, it comes with a shorter warranty, is less removable, lifted higher up and is arguably less water resistant. For the added cost buyers of the Lo Pro will get a lower profile cover that’s a bit more secure while also being detachable. The right decision ultimately depends on what the buyer wants though, and some will opt for the Truxport to get that additional 1.5″ of vertical space for enhanced storage.
